Research Ethics Committee (REC)

1. Objectives:

The objective of the Research Ethics Committee (REC) is to provide quality and consistent review mechanism for Research in the field of Humanities and Social Sciences and to ensure all proposals dealt by the committee follows the Ethical guidelines for Bio-medical, Social Sciences and Management research on human subjects.

2. Role of REC: Function

REC will review and approve research proposals involving human participants. REC will uphold the dignity, rights, safety and wellbeing of all actual and potential research participants. The goals of research, however important, should never be permitted to override the physical and psychological well being of the research subjects.

REC will make sure that all the cardinal principles of research ethics viz. Autonomy, Beneficence, Non-malfeasance and Justice are taken care in planning conduct and reporting of the proposed research. For this purpose REC will look in to the informed consent process, risk-benefit ratio, distribution of burden and benefit, and provisions for appropriate compensations wherever required. REC will review the proposals before the start of the study as well as monitor the research throughout the study until and after the completion of the study through appropriated well documented procedures for example Annual reports, Final reports, Field visits etc. The committee will also examine compliance with all regulatory requirements, applicable guidelines and laws.

The REC will review all referred research proposals in the field of Humanities and Social Sciences involving human subjects to be conducted by the staff of KBP College and other academic and non academic institutions irrespective of the funding agency.

3. Composition of REC:

Independence and competence of REC is ensured by its multidisciplinary and multi-sectoral composition. The proposed REC will have 13 members and a minimum of five persons are required to compose a quorum.

To maintain the independence of the committee, the Chairperson of the committee is selected from outside the KBP College. The Member Secretary, who belongs to the KBP College, will conduct the business of the committee. Other members of the committee represent the various fields of Science, Commerce, Humanities and Social Sciences including lay public to reflect the diverse viewpoints.
